Applying to SUNY's using the SUNY application over the common app. has no bearing whatsoever on whether or not you will be accepted. Acceptance is based strictly on the content of the application, academic statistics, recommendations, transcripts, essays, etc. If a SUNY is going to accept you, it doesn't matter whether you submit the common app. or the suny app. We found the process to be more organized when submitting the online SUNY app. to SUNY's and common app. to all others. Trust me--I've been through this a couple of times and the results were very positive.

In addition to your SUNY application, a number of SUNY campuses require or recommend that applicants complete a supplemental application. The supplemental application provides the admissions office with additional information, typically regarding your interests, activities, etc. and these supplemental applications are often necessary for consideration for merit aid. Campuses may also ask applicants to complete an essay or personal statement as part of the supplemental application as well. If you apply to a SUNY school using the Common Application, you will be able to access any supplementary information through this application.

Q: What is the freshman application process?
A: The University at Albany accepts both the Common Application and the State University of New York (SUNY) Application. The application fee is $50. Freshman applicants must submit an official high school transcript and official SAT or ACT scores. You may choose to write your essay on any of the topics in The Common Application, Coalition Application or SUNY Application. You will also be asked to briefly explain why you believe you will be a good fit for your preferred honors program at Stony Brook.Admission into any of the combined programs is highly selective. Matriculated undergraduate students may apply to the combined program and will complete all of the application requirements for the master’s degree program. The admission application process includes a review of all course work completed and a minimum GPA of 3.2, two recommendations (one must be from his/her SUNY Empire State College undergraduate primary mentor), and application essays. Students applying to the combined MA in Teaching (MAT) program will also require an interview with faculty.

The application process begins with submission of either the SUNY Application and Supplement or The Common Application. Required credentials include official high school transcripts (including 12th-year first-quarter grades), results of either the SAT I or ACT, and ESF essay question response. While academic recommendations are not required, they will be considered in the review of the application if submitted. SUNY-ESF requires students to submit scores of either SAT I or ACT (or both). The highest scores for each section from all test dates will be considered. SUNY-ESF will accept SAT I or ACT scores posted on your official high school transcript. However, if your high school does not include SAT I or ACT scores on your transcript, you must request official scores be sent directly from the testing agency..
