Graduate Admissions Essays - Electrical Engineering.

The following are the minimum admissions requirements as outlined by the UC Berkeley Graduate Division: “(1) a bachelor’s degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution; (2) a satisfactory scholastic average, usually a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale; and (3) enough undergraduate training to do graduate work in your chosen field. Satisfying minimal standards, however, does not guarantee your admission, since the number of qualified applicants far exceeds the number of places available. As a result, many well-qualified applicants cannot be accommodated.” Additional information can be found at . Applicants from countries in which the official language is not English must also demonstrate English language proficiency. Refer to the below for full details. Admissions decisions are governed by committee, and are based on several factors in the application, including (but not limited to) test scores, academics, essays, letters of recommendation, and prior research and work experience. Students from all educational fields are eligible to apply, but all applicants should be aware that the masters curriculum includes required coursework in bioengineering fundamentals; applicants with a non-technical background should make it clear in their application why they feel that they will be able to handle the more rigorous technical components of the coursework. Conversely, applicants who already hold a masters degree in bioengineering (or a similar field) will need to carefully specify their reasons for pursuing this additional masters; duplicate degrees are not allowed.

Admission to the Graduate Programs of the Mechanical Engineering Department is highly competitive; the Department looks for strong evidence of motivation and achievement. Admission decisions are generally based on quantitative metrics (GPA, GRE and TOEFL scores), letters of recommendation, essay statements, and previous work experience. In addition, it is expected that a Mechanical Engineering or Reliability Engineering Faculty member be interested in advising the applicant before she can be accepted into the program.

The admissions application includes a Supplemental Diversity Essay. Must I complete it?
UCSD values a diverse student body; the supplemental diversity essay allows applicants to comment on how they might contribute to diversity on campus. Departments review these essays for the purposes of nominating students for University diversity fellowships (for which international students are not eligible). In short, submitting the supplemental diversity essay with your admissions application is entirely optional. It will not negatively impact your chances of admission if you decide not to provide the essay.

May I change my major / research area after I have been admitted to the graduate program?
A change into any non-impacted major may be requested via petition after the first quarter in residence in the ECE graduate program. (Computer Engineering and Electrical Circuits and Systems majors are specifically impacted; major change requests to these areas are not permitted after admission.)

The essay is a crucial part of the application. A well-structured, comprehensive, and concise essay should clearly reflect an applicant's experiences, accomplishments, research interests, and professional goals. The essay is the applicant's opportunity to convince the admissions committee that he or she will be a successful addition to the graduate program. The essay provides the admissions committee with an opportunity to determine what an applicant wants in a graduate program and if the Department of Systems and Information Engineering can provide what the applicant is looking for. The graduate program values diverse research interests in diverse areas. Therefore, it is important to be honest in the essay regarding your research interests. The essay also provides the committee with a writing sample from the applicant. The formulation of arguments and the ability to present them clearly and concisely on paper is an important skill in graduate school.
