these guidelines to create your best grad school application essay.

Most schools ask for three letters of recommendation, but check each school's requirements. Your recommendation writers should be people who know you well who can about your academic performance in detail and attest to your suitability to begin graduate study. You should choose professors in your major field of study; professors with whom you have worked in a research capacity; or employers whose input is relevant to your application, particularly if you are applying to business school. As a rule of thumb, you should try to ask Associate Professors or Professors to write your letters; however, a detailed letter from an Assistant Professor will serve your application far better than a vague, impersonal letter from a celebrated tenured professor. Do not seek character references from family or friends, even if they happen to be judges or doctors; letters should speak to your academic or professional performance, not just your personal qualities.

Personal Essay Samples for Graduate School Application

As any graduate school admission officer will tell you, numbers don’t always tell the complete story. If that was the case, students would be admitted or denied solely on their numerical grades and test scores. Instead, graduate school applications usually require an essay component so that school officials can get a sense of a student’s personality, ideals, and commitment to their studies.

Graduate School Personal Statement, Admission, Application Essay

Don't make assumptions about your graduate school personal statements. Many programs simply ask you to submit a personal statement without any further guidance. Other programs will tell you exactly how they want the essay structured along with word count limits and formatting requirements. Review the prompt thoroughly and plan your essay before you begin writing to ensure that you create an essay that will be an effective and persuasive addition to your application package.

Every essay here comes from a successful grad school application. And you’re going to love their stories. (We sure did!)

This is especially applicable to those who have worked professionally since having graduated from school. Relevant items here might include work experience, publications, and presentations, as well as language and computer skills.

Writing Your Graduate School Application Essay

Unfortunately, this is probably not the last time you will have to write an essay like this. If you do get into grad school and stick with academics, you will find yourself almost constantly writing grant applications (for support during graduate course work, for field work, for the dissertation write-up stage, for post-docs, and then endlessly after that for further research grants) that ask for very similar kinds of essays. This means you need to get comfortable with this very awkward genre of asking for support, a genre where you are showing both that you know what you are talking about, but also that you also need cash/institutional support to help you figure out more about what you are talking about. It is a genre that is nobody’s native language, and it is a struggle for everyone to figure out the right tone to take in these essays. That mostly means you need to start working on your essay early so that you can go through an endless number of drafts. Good luck!
