A Dental School Application Essay - Accepted

Despite the important role the personal statement plays in the graduate school application processes, little research has been done on its functional features and little instruction has been given about it in academic writing courses. The author conducted a multi-level discourse analysis on a corpus of 30 medical/dental school application letters, using both a hand-tagged move analysis and a computerized analysis of lexical features of texts. Five recurrent moves were identified, namely, explaining the reason to pursue the proposed study, establishing credentials related to the fields of medicine/dentistry, discussing relevant life experience, stating future career goals, and describing personality.

Sample Dental School Application - Essay Experts

After graduating in April 2010 from Eastern Michigan University I started preparing for the dental application that would open on June 4th. First off my personal statement, how was it going to be different from last years? How have I grown as an individual and a student in the past 12 months? What will make me stand out amongst the other 2200 applicants? Wanting to prepare a stellar essay, I fine-tuned and edited this essay almost everyday. I asked for comments from my family, friends and previous professors to see what things they thought stood out. Their feedback gave me a good idea of how this essay spoke of me as a student and individual.

Documents from a prior application ( Part I scores, Course by Course Evaluations, scores, and letters of evaluation) can be carried forward if they are available from our record archives. Create separate documents for each category and start listing all of your key experiences related to each group. After doing so, select several experiences from each category to further develop as possible experiences to use in a personal statement. Begin plotting out a basic outline and structure for your message. The goal of the personal statement is to emphasize your strengths without giving everything away.
